Nong Khiaw

Nong Kniaw is a beautiful place. People travel there because of the beautiful surroundings and for the serenity of the place. We had a gorgeous hut at the Riverside Nong Khiaw at the far end of the property which meant we got a little exercise as we wended our way there and back several times a day. 350 steps to breakfast - another 200 steps to the road.

Our resort stretched along the river. The largest building was where we ate breakfast.

It was foggy every morning, and cool.

We were warm in our big bed though. Under the bed was a bank of lights that we were advised to turn on at night before we went to sleep. It actually made the bed too warm.

At night it was cold but there was still a way to star gaze. And play Solitaire.

We were there for the view of course. This looming limestone karst was across the river and made for a stunning outlook.

Sunset lit the limestone karst. The bridge made a very convenient viewpoint.

Looking up river from the bridge.

Early morning from our room.

Geordie waves like the Pope from his viewing stand.

Here are a lovely trio who saved us from a monster.

This creature was about 30 cm long. The shorter woman in the photo aboved mimed it biting an ankle or a hip and then mimed expiring from the bite. Because Geordie wanted me to get a picture the creature escaped into a hole under our step, but the older woman used her machete to cut several short sticks which she stuffed into the hole and then let us know we would be safe.

This sweetheart was the daughter of the older woman.

We took the locally scheduled bus back to Luang Prabang  We got to the station at 8:45 am - the station agent advised that, to ensure we got a good seat. The bus is scheduled to leave at 10 am but in practice it leaves when the bus is full (24 passengers) or at 11 am, whichever comes first. In our case both events occurred at the same time since up until 10:50 am we were 7 people short of a load.

Even while we waited we had a chance for a good view.

It was a beautiful place and we are so glad we went.
