Dinner in Tarragona

Last night we had a fabulous meal in Tarragona. We happened upon the restaurant and the menu caught our eye. But it was the menu for Friday night. We chatted with the chef who informed us he was preparing the Saturday Menú so we made our reservation - for 9 pm, hoping the place would have customers by then.

It's an Italian restaurant. Perhaps the Lab part is because they experiment with the food.

The restaurant was housed in a room built on Roman foundations with Romanesque arches above. When we arrived we were the only customers. Typical. But within 20 minutes the place filled up.

The menu was six courses with two choices with each course.

We had a local wine - a Priorat, limited release, DOQ - meaning it came from a particular qualified region of Spain. The label showed artistic poppies. The taste showed sophistication.

My first course was not on the menu - a crema calabaza - zucchini soup.

And Geordie had the Salad Bouquet in crunchy bread basket.

My second course - Sfoglia de Mozzarella Bufala - filled with arugula and York ham.

Geordie's was the Vitello Tonnato - a tuna mayonnaise on thin slices of veal.

Next, our vegetable course - an eggplant parmigiana.

And a tart of puff pastry filled with vegetables.

The pasta course - lasagne homemade and delicious

And Fazzoletti - ravioli stuffed with meat and vegetables and sauced with butter and sage.

Finally, the entree. Bocconcini of chicken with mango chutney.

And Stracotto with polenta - a rich beef stew.

Dessert - oh my, I hardly had room. Chocolate panna cotta with berries

And a chocolate cake stuffed with pears.

I liked them.

Of course no Italian meal is complete without house made limoncello.

Yes, this meal was wonderful. The flavours were incredible, each course unique and although small, bursting with great taste. We were more than satisfied, we were stuffed. And the absolute best part - the price per person for a six course meal of amazing flavour was €15 per person - less than $20.00 Canadian each.

This is a meal we will remember. I hope you could at least enjoy the pictures.
